Spirit of the Land
The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reported in 2016 that 360,600 Canadians are living with a serve core housing need.
Anhart Community Housing Society and Anhart Homes CCC Ltd., its community contribution company subsidiary, has a plan to build 20,000 affordable homes in regions of Canada.
Anhart is currently developing four affordable housing projects in Vancouver, Hope and Merritt BC, and has active development in 10 municipalities or indigenous governance regions in Canada.
Spirit of the Land is positioned to be a significant connector in the expansion of these endeavors.
Spirit of the Land has partnered with Anhart to provide land-finding and community consultation services for all 3,500 Canadian municipalities and more than 700 indigenous governing bodies. A repository of relevant affordable housing organizations, services and research is published and maintained by Spirit of the Land.
Other services provided by Spirit of the Land include random and network-based contacts with Canadian municipalities and indigenous governing bodies, maintenance of an online repository of cross-Canada affordable housing information, and pre-training of local operating partners.
Communication between Canadian community contribution companies in the Smart Ant network was influenced by the free flow of information between loosely related community-based organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa, which in turn were influenced by a village-based pharmacy developed by local farmers.
These small world network characteristics found an application in Spirit of the Land’s challenge to help reduce a Canada-wide housing shortage and to shrink geographical obstacles associated with population sparsity in the world's second largest country.
Spirit of the Land is the front runner of Anhart’s Canada-wide expansion efforts and is currently fostering relationships with Canadian municipalities and indigenous governance bodies.
Indigenous groups are over-represented in affordable housing needs. Spirit of the Land has a strong commitment to building relationships with First Nations, Inuit centres and Metis groups.
