Studies in Emergent Living
Studies in Emergent Living was influence by a Tanzanian village pharmacy business which began in 1988 and had global influence over the next 30 years.
In an open learning environment, which invites all participants to contribute, Studies in Emergent Living seeks to apply an understanding of nonlinear emergent principles to everyday life and the development of community contribution companies and community-based organizations globally.
The proponents of the learning group see the impact of an over-emphasis on rational reductionism in modernity as harmful to holistic living.
Reductive thinking is a classical, science-based approach to life which reduces social issues to the sum of their parts and holds that solutions to social problems can be rectified by a linear analysis and top-down correction of the component parts of the problem.
Complexity theory follows emergent principles and can be applied to social problems. These applications are nonlinear and influence social systems in a holistic way with many free-flowing and randomly interacting parts. Bottom-up emergent properties operate naturally and efficiently in complex systems and create order out of chaos through feedback and pattern recognition within the parts of the system.
Much can be learned from global indigenous cultures which are not yet fully succumbed to Western ideologies of reductionists individualism and still promote holistic principles. These principles must be relearned by many persons born after the onset of the Age of Reason, rapid industrialization, and the recent Information Age.
